UMU Online, the House of Innovation and Collaboration, serves as a showcase for the work, a learning space, and a center for strengthening the competencies of UMU Buton lecturers to encourage productive, innovative, effective, and sustainable research and community service. Knowledge Sharing on October 5, 2026, at the Al Munawwara Ballroom, UMU Buton

Buton Muslim University continues to build an academic ecosystem that encourages research and Community Service (PkM) to not just be obligations of the Tridharma (three pillars) but to develop into institutional strengths. One strategic step aimed at achieving this goal is strengthening the UMU Buton Innovation and Collaboration Center as a meeting place for ideas, knowledge, experience, innovation, and academic collaboration networks.

This enthusiasm was reflected in the Sharing Knowledge activity: Strengthening Research and PkM UMU Buton led by the Head of the House of Innovation and Collaboration UMU Buton, Aliyaman, SP, MP The activity was also attended by the Head of the Organizing Body UMU Buton, Ibrahim Marsela , and the Chancellor of UMU Buton, Dr. La Ode Rasmin . The presence of university leaders conveyed a strong message that the development of research, innovation, and PkM is an important part of the strategic agenda of strengthening the quality and competitiveness of UMU Buton.

The Innovation and Collaboration House is designed to be more than just a gathering place for discussion. It is intended to be a space that connects diverse academic potentials into a shared strength. It fosters a spirit of building a culture of knowledge sharing, converging competencies, developing ideas, facilitating research, strengthening Community Service Programs (PKM), and producing work that adds value to the university and the community.

One of the important functions of the Innovation and Collaboration House is to serve as a showcase for UMU Buton’s research results and innovative products . Lecturers’ research findings have significant academic value and potential for significant use. However, research findings will have a broader impact if they are well-documented, recognized by the academic community, accessible to partners, and developed into products or innovations that can be utilized by the community.

Therefore, the research showcase is not merely a space to display work. It is part of a strategy to build academic visibility and reputation. Research results, innovative products, appropriate technologies, community empowerment models, books, publications, and various other academic outputs can be displayed as evidence that UMU Buton’s research activities produce tangible results.

From this showcase, new opportunities emerge. Research that initially yields only a report can be developed into a scientific article, book, learning model, appropriate technology, commercial product, or innovation that can be used by the community. A successful Community Service (PKM) program can also be developed into an empowerment model that can be replicated in other regions. Thus, the Innovation and Collaboration Center serves as a bridge between knowledge, innovation, and utilization .

Another equally important function is strengthening Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) . Research results and innovative work by lecturers require adequate protection and recognition. IPR is not simply a legal document, but part of efforts to protect intellectual property while enhancing the strategic value of research results.

A culture of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) needs to be cultivated from the early stages of research. Lecturers need to understand that not all research results end with publication. Some research findings may possess innovative characteristics that merit intellectual property protection. With appropriate guidance, lecturers can understand how to identify IPR potential, prepare documentation, and develop research findings to achieve academic and economic value.

In the context of UMU Buton as an Entrepreneurial University , strengthening IPR also has significant relevance. Knowledge and innovation are crucial assets that can be developed into added value. Research that generates innovation not only enriches academic resources but also opens up opportunities for downstreaming, collaboration, technology utilization, and product development.

Therefore, the Innovation and Collaboration Center also needs to function as a space that encourages a shift in the way lecturers view research. Research should not be viewed solely as an activity to fulfill the Tridharma (three pillars) obligations, but rather as an investment in knowledge that can generate reputation, innovation, networking, and economic and social benefits.

This strengthening requires improving the competency of lecturers. Not all lecturers have the same level of research experience and competence. Some have experience obtaining grants and producing publications, while others still require guidance in developing proposals, determining methodologies, processing data, writing articles, selecting journals, developing outputs, and preparing intellectual property rights documents.

This is where the function of the coaching clinic becomes very important.

Coaching clinics can provide a more practical and focused mentoring environment. Lecturers not only gain theoretical knowledge about research but also bring real-world issues they are facing to discuss together. Research proposals can be reviewed, research designs refined, methodologies discussed, articles developed, and research output opportunities mapped.

This type of mentoring model allows for gradual, needs-based competency development. Lecturers with experience can share their experiences with others. Researchers who have successfully secured funding can share proposal development strategies. Lecturers with publication experience can share their knowledge about the scientific writing and publication process. Thus, knowledge doesn’t stop with individuals but becomes the collective capital of the institution.

Knowledge Sharing ultimately becomes more than just a forum for sharing information. It becomes part of the process of building a learning organization , one that continuously learns from experience, improves weaknesses, and develops the capacity of its members.

The Head of the UMU Buton Innovation and Collaboration House, Aliyaman, SP, MP , is strategically positioned to drive this function. The innovation house requires leadership capable of bringing together people, ideas, and opportunities. The challenge is not simply to create programs, but to ensure they produce tangible changes to faculty capacity and institutional productivity.

Meanwhile, the presence of Ibrahim Marsela, Chairman of the UMU Buton Organizing Board, demonstrated the importance of institutional support for developing a culture of research and innovation. A research ecosystem cannot grow through individual enthusiasm alone. It requires policy support, resources, facilities, appreciation, and institutional support for academic capacity development.

The presence of UMU Buton Rector, Dr. La Ode Rasmin , also demonstrated that research and Community Service (PkM) must be positioned as an integral part of university development. Universities seeking to enhance their reputation cannot simply strengthen the learning process. The quality of research, publications, innovation, intellectual property rights (IPR), Community Service (PkM), and collaboration must all work in tandem.

UMU Buton has ample scope to develop a research agenda based on local potential. Buton and the surrounding region possess a wealth of research issues and opportunities, spanning maritime economics, agriculture, animal husbandry, education, entrepreneurship, trade, governance, information technology, and community development. This potential can be a source of research with strong character and high relevance to regional needs.

The Innovation and Collaboration Center can act as a bridge between local potential and the academic capacity of lecturers. Community issues can generate research topics. Research can generate innovation. Innovation can generate intellectual property rights (IPR). IPR can develop products or utilization models from these resources. These findings can then be implemented through Community Service Programs (PkM) and developed through collaboration with the government, business, the community, and other partners.

With this model, research and PkM no longer operate in silos. They can form a knowledge value chain that begins with problem identification, research, innovation, IPR protection, downstreaming, implementation, and impact evaluation.

This is both a challenge and an opportunity for the UMU Buton Innovation and Collaboration House going forward. The house must be a place where ideas are born, competencies are developed, works are showcased, and collaborations are held.

Knowledge sharing is the first step in building this culture. This forum reminds us that the strength of a university is determined not only by the quantity of human resources, but also by the institution’s ability to organize knowledge and transform it into valuable work.

The UMU Buton Innovation and Collaboration House is expected to be a home for knowledge that transforms into action . Lecturers are encouraged not only to research but also to produce outputs. Research results are not only stored but also displayed. Products are not only created but also developed. Work is not only published but protected through IPR and, where possible, downstreamed. Competence is not only possessed by individuals but is transmitted through coaching clinics and collaboration.

This is where a productive academic culture can grow. Knowledge is shared, competencies strengthened, research developed, innovations born, intellectual property rights protected, and the results returned to society.

For UMU Buton, the Innovation and Collaboration House is more than just a unit or activity space. It is the driving force behind the research, innovation, and community service (PkM) ecosystem , expected to strengthen the quality of human resources, increase academic productivity, expand collaborative networks, and strengthen UMU Buton’s position as an Entrepreneurial University that generates knowledge, innovation, and tangible benefits for the community.
